MODERN MEDIA MAN SUMMIT KICKS OFF IN ATLANTA FRIDAY AT 9 A.M.

Keynotes, book authors make M3Summit a one of a kind event for men and dad bloggers

ATLANTA—The  Modern Media Man Summit in Atlanta’s first big day of activities begin Friday, Sept. 10, but organizers are making final preparations, exhibitors are setting up, and men, dads and women and moms from around the nation are converging on Atlanta for this first-ever blogging event.

Friday’s events will begin with a keynote address at 9 a.m. in the Capitol Ballroom of the Sheraton Atlanta on Courtland by noted author Charles J. Orlando, the author of “The Problem with Women is … Men,” as he talks about the myths of social media and the promise of social engagement.

Orlando, a very colorful and expressive speaker, says that social engagement has been the key to his online success, growing his book’s Facebook Fan Page from 300 Fans on March 1, 2010, to almost 60,000 today.

At 10:30 a.m. three different sessions will begin including Jason Falls discussing “Brands and Blogs,” Andrew Bennett’s “No Ordinary Photographs,” and Angus Nelson’s “The Vulnerable Man.”

At 11:45 a.m. Caleb Gardner will speak about “Getting Dads Organized for Brand Attention,” Ron Mattocks begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting will lead a panel discussion entitled “Daddy Blog to Book,”  and Jim Kukral, the author of “ATTENTION! This book will make you money,” will speak about “It’s Tough Being an Internet Geek Dad.”

At 2 p.m. Patrick O’Keefe will speak about “Jack Bauer’s Guide to Managing Online Communities,” Kevin King will run a panel entitled, “From Facebook to Facetime,” and CC Chapman will speak about “What Does It Mean to be a Guy in the 21^st Century?”

At 3:15 p.m. Nathan Hangen will speak about “Turning Your Blog into a Business,” while Clay Nichols runs a panel entitled, “Building Your Web Video Network The Dadlabs Experience,” and Roland Warren speaks about “The Fatherhood Initiative.”

At 4:45 p.m. Spotlight Speakers Liz Strauss and Carol Roth will speak to attendees about “How to Partner with Women.”

Saturday has an equally impressive line up of speakers and panelists including Stacy Debroff, known online as @MomCentral, and John Porcaro, from DadCentral; Dave Taylor and Keynoter Ted Murphy of IZEA.

Organizers have arranged to bring together the entire men’s marketplace; bloggers, podcasters, videobloggers, online TV and radio broadcasters, social media influencers, consumers and small business owners for the event.

Forty-one years and however many months ago my father stood, sat or paced in a hospital waiting room. He didn’t know who it was that he was waiting for. Didn’t know if he was going to become the proud daddy of a boy or girl, he just prayed for a healthy child.

Ten years ago my own experience was distinctly different from that of my father. I was a part of the entire birthing experience. When my son made his entrance into the world I was there to see him. I literally watched him his head emerge followed by his body.

My father isn’t to blame for not being alongside of my mother for my birth. That wasn’t how it was done back then. It really was a different world then and no one could have imagined that decades later we would call 2010 the year of the daddy blogger.

So I am honored and privileged to be a dad during a time when it is not considered unusual or extraordinary for fathers to be very involved in raising our children. The days in which we were seen as the breadwinner and disciplinarian are gone. Don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking our fathers or grandfathers for what took place before.

Nor will I say that we are more enlightened now. We are just luckier. And though this so called new wave has actually been going on for a while there are things that are new. One of them is a more organized effort by the dads to build relationships with other fathers.

We are not interested in being mothers. Moms are great, but they already exist. We are men, we are dads and we do things a little bit differently. One of the great joys of the daddy blogosphere is the chance to get to talk and interact with other dads. Ladies, we love you but you just don’t understand life the way that we do. You have your challenges and we have ours. And part of the joy of the daddy blogosphere is getting a chance to talk to the fellas about whatever it is we want to talk about.

The daddy blogosphere is quite the collection of characters. We are an assortment of executives, stay-at-home-dads, entrepreneurs, misfits and more. Jew, Gentile, Black, White or Asian- we are all accounted for in some way or another.

And now with the M3 Summit just around the corner the boys have the opportunity to gather and talk a little bit about what our lives are like. It is long overdue and many of us are more than grateful for its appearance. There is something special and warm about getting a chance to step out from behind the keyboard and shake the hand of that guy you have been sharing potty training stories with.

Or if your children are older maybe you are talking about what it is like to have a daughter who is dating and how you want to protect her from dating some boy who makes you uncomfortable because he resembles that same guy you used to be.

Whatever the case is it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that 2010 is the year of the daddy blogger. We’re more than just men. We’re fathers and that is a badge to wear with pride.
